Rosacea is an inflammatory skin condition that causes enlargement of the tiny vessels on the face, along with general redness or flushing of the skin. It is usually seen over the nose, cheeks, and forehead and is often mistaken for acne. Environmental exposure to UV light, certain foods, alcohol pollution or heat can all cause facial redness flare-ups.
In more severe forms of rosacea, it can affect the globe of the eye causing them to be either look pigmented or constantly bloodshot. In its worst variety, it can distort the nose due to drastic enlargement of the oil glands, which is called rhinophyma.
Anyone can get rosacea, but it most often affects adults with fair skin of Northern European dissent. The inflammation tends to come and go with triggers. Treatment focuses on identifying and reducing triggers as well as treating the redness associated with the overly reactive superficial vascular system.
Rosacea treatment can include medications, energy-based treatment to remove damage caused by the disease and lifestyle modifications to reduce triggers and prevent flare-ups. Treatment depends on the type and severity of your rosacea.
Treatment for facial redness and enlarged vessels are most effective with light-based therapies such as Pulsed Dye Laser (PDL). Although there are several other lasers and even intense pulsed light (IPL) that can be used in this capacity, they tend to take many more treatments and may provide less overall clearance. Despite owning half a dozen vascular devices, we use the PDL most of the time to ensure the safest and most effective treatment for facial redness.
For more challenging cases where skin changes are evident such as Rhinophyma, we use the CO2 laser to reshape the nose to the contours it had before the overgrowth of oil glands. Our combination of fractional and traditional techniques provide maximum results.
Your rosacea may also have triggers, such as heat, food, exercise, changes in weather, or overexposure to the sun. Knowing these triggers can help keep your rosacea under control.
Colorado Skin and Vein is a state-of-the-art center with a large selection of energy-based tools to treat skin concerns such as the redness and flushing of the skin for rosacea treatment.
Pulsed dye laser (PDL)
The team uses the most effective treatment available for rosacea. The pulse dye laser (PDL) is used to remove small facial veins and redness associated with rosacea. The team recommends a series of five treatments to get the best results.
Nd:YAG laser
The Nd:YAG laser uses pulses of light to reduce larger or deeper veins associated with rosacea, such as on the forehead and temples. The team also uses this laser tool to treat deeper purple or blue vessels on the face.
CO2 laser
The team may also use their CO2 laser to treat Rhinophyma associated with rosacea. This laser tool is used to reshape the nose or retexture the skin to state it was before the effect of rosacea could be seen.
