Restless Leg Syndrome

Do restless legs ever keep you from falling asleep or do you ever have to get out of bed just to walk around to make your legs feel better?

If so, then you might have Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS), a condition that causes an urge to move your legs due to an uncomfortable sensation. Many patients with RLS also experience nighttime leg twitching (AKA periodic limb movement) which can wake them from sleep. Symptoms tend to get worse at night and the process usually gets worse as you age. One the biggest problems with RLS is how it affects sleep and thus your activities the following day.

RLS is complex but one of the most common contributing factors is vein not working properly. For many patients RLS is their first symptom of venous disease and when the veins are treated, their RLS drastically improves. Don’t let restless leg syndrome continue to disrupt your sleep. Colorado Skin and Vein’s expert team is ready to help. Our goal is to ensure you can experience the comfort and restful night’s sleep you deserve.

Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) is a condition which causes leg discomfort. Common symptoms of RLS include:

  • Aching
  • Cramping
  • Itching
  • Tingling
  • Crawling
  • Throbbing

These symptoms trigger an overwhelming need to move your legs. Up to 90% of people with RLS also experience periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD), in which leg muscles tighten and twitch at least once a minute during sleep. Usually RLS happens at night, so it often disrupts sleep and causes daytime drowsiness, irritability, and other problems. About 10-15% of Americans suffer from restless leg syndrome.

The cause of RLS can be hard to detect, but most commonly it is associated with vein problems. The complex feedback loop starts with swelling from the vessels causing compression on the nerves in the lower limbs and results in altered dopamine in the brain signaling patients with the all too familiar urge to move their legs in order to be comfortable.

Numerous studies have established a connection between vein problems, swelling and restless legs syndrome. In general people, vein problems and RLS symptoms experience significant relief after the vein issues are treated.

If your RLS symptoms interrupt your sleep or leave you feeling exhausted during the day, it’s time to contact Colorado Skin and Vein to schedule an evaluation.

The team will perform a comprehensive evaluation, including a physical exam and vascular imaging, to determine the cause of your symptoms. Then they will prescribe a personalized treatment plan to get your RLS under control.

The most effective treatments for RLS focus on treating the underlying causes. In most patients the underlying issue centers around venous disease. When the venous disease is corrected, swelling is reduced thus the alterations in the dopamine loop of the system are reduced. As the system normalizes ,patients’ legs are significantly more comfortable.

Day-to-day improvement focuses on compression, exercise and even some supplements have shown to significantly improve symptoms in some studies. In complex cases, medications can be used to further reduce symptoms.
