The most effective tattoo removal available today uses short bursts of light to break down tattoo inks trapped in the skin. This results in the body being able to remove the ink of an unwanted tattoo.

Tattoo inks become trapped in the skin because they are too large for the skin to break down. With the help of nano and pico second lasers, these inks are broken down into smaller piece so the skin can remove them. The smaller the ink particle is able to be broken down into, the more effective the tattoo removal.

Lasers that fire in one billionth, or even in one trillionth, of a second are used as faster firing leads to better breakdown of the tattoo inks.

Q-switched nanosecond lasers were first used for tattoo removal back in the 60’s, but the devices and techniques were not commonly available until the mid-90s. Since then, the power and speed of these devices has grown. Over the last 10 years there have been drastic improvements with the advent of picosecond lasers that fire in trillionths of a second. Tattoos previously unable to be treated were suddenly improving and the number of treatments needed were significantly reduced.

At Colorado Skin and Vein, we have two separate Picosecond tattoo removal lasers, The Discovery Quanta Pico and Lumenis PiQ04. With just under half a million dollar price tag, this tag team is a very rare set of technology. Having these two devices along with almost two decades worth of experience allows us to get results that are significantly faster and safer than any other tattoo removal office in Colorado. If also allows us to treat difficult areas such the eye lids, brows, and scars with pigment issues.

The number of tattoo removal sessions you need varies based on many factors. While planning your laser tattoo removal, the team considers multiple factors, including:

• The size of your tattoo
• Your tattoo’s location
• The age of the tattoo
• Which colors of ink were used
• Depth of ink
• Amount of ink (is it a cover up?)

Cosmetic tattoos are tattoos meant to mimic the appearance of makeup such as lip liner or eye liner. Microblading is a technique used to tattoo eyebrows in order to give the a thicker look or more uniform shape. Sometimes these procedures do not result in achieving the expected outcome for patients who receive them due issue with shape, color, or poor symmetry.
