Botox Q&A

What is Botox?

Botox is a protein that decreases muscle movement. As it slows the contraction in the target muscles, it smooths away lines and temporarily keeps them from coming back.

What areas does Botox treat?

Botox is FDA-approved to treat several areas in the top part of the face, including:

  • Glabellar lines: frown lines, or “11” lines, between the eyebrows
  • Forehead lines: horizontal lines above eyebrows
  • Crow’s feet: lines that crinkle at the outer corners of the eyes

Colorado Skin and Vein also offers Jeuveau and the newest neurotoxin, Daxxify. Both are FDA-approved to treat glabellar lines at this time. Botox is currently the only neurotoxin FDA-approved for treatment in three parts of the face.

When might I need Botox?

As the body ages, it’s normal to experience crow’s feet, glabellar lines, and forehead lines. Repetitive muscle movements in the upper face and decreasing collagen and elastin combine to cause lines that last long after you make an expression. Eventually, these lines will set in and remain on the skin.

Botox can be used for:

  • 11s, scowl lines between that make the wrinkles between the brows
  • Smile lines around the lateral eyes
  • Forehead lines
  • Gummy Smile (smile where both the teeth and gums show)
  • Perioral lines, the vertical lines above and below the lips
  • Jaw clenching
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating
  • Scar revision to release skin tension during treatment

If you want to address wrinkles while still looking like yourself, Botox or another neurotoxin could be a great choice. If your issue is jaw clenching, headaches, excessive sweating, or any of a host of other medical issues where Botox is effective, the team can help.

The Colorado Skin and Vein expert team understands exactly how neurotoxins work and where they’re most effective. They can give you a very natural look, and you’ll still be able to make facial expressions and never look overdone.

How long will Botox last?

Botox takes effect within 2 weeks, and the full benefits appear in around a month. You can experience up to four months of decreased lines from a Botox treatment.

You should schedule treatments every three or four months for the best results and to keep a natural-looking appearance.

Can Botox treat laugh lines?

Botox doesn’t treat laugh lines (the vertical folds that go from the outer edges of your nose to the mouth). Laugh lines are very different from forehead lines, frown lines, and crow’s feet because they’re related more to volume loss than muscle movement. These areas are usually best treated with filler to replace volume.

Botox and other neurotoxins only affect muscles, so they can’t increase volume. Dermal fillers like Revanesse® Versacan increase volume in your laugh lines, lips, or other areas in the face.
