Understanding Facial Veins

What Are Facial Veins?

Facial veins—including spider veins, broken capillaries, and telangiectasias—appear as small red, purple, or blue lines on the face, most commonly around the nose, cheeks, and chin. These visible vessels develop when tiny blood vessels near the skin’s surface dilate and become visible.

Multiple factors contribute to facial vein development: genetics, sun exposure, aging, rosacea, hormonal changes, and trauma. While medically harmless, facial veins can significantly impact confidence and appearance. Colorado Skin & Vein specializes in advanced laser treatments that safely and effectively eliminate these vessels, restoring clear, even-toned skin without surgery or downtime.

Common Questions

Facial Vein Treatment FAQ

What causes facial spider veins and broken capillaries?

Multiple factors contribute to facial vein development: genetics, sun exposure, rosacea, aging, hormonal changes, and trauma. Sun damage weakens delicate vessels over time. Rosacea creates chronic inflammation leading to visible vessels. Aging causes vessel walls to lose elasticity. Temperature extremes, alcohol consumption, and certain medications also play roles. Most people develop facial veins due to a combination of these factors.

Most patients report minimal discomfort—typically a warming sensation or slight snapping feeling during treatment. Modern laser systems include integrated cooling technology that significantly enhances comfort. Sessions last only 15-30 minutes. No anesthesia is usually needed, though topical numbing cream can be applied for sensitive areas. Most find the procedure far more comfortable than anticipated.

Most patients require 2-4 treatment sessions spaced 4-6 weeks apart for optimal clearance. The exact number depends on vessel extent, size, depth, skin type, and individual response. Smaller superficial vessels often respond faster than larger deeper veins. We assess progress after each session and adjust your treatment plan accordingly.

Most patients achieve 60-90% clearance of treated facial veins after completing their recommended series. Treated vessels darken initially, then gradually fade over 2-6 weeks. Smaller vessels often clear after 1-2 treatments, while deeper veins may need additional sessions. Results look completely natural—treated areas blend seamlessly with surrounding skin.

No downtime required—resume normal activities immediately. Mild redness similar to light sunburn typically resolves within hours. Treated vessels may darken temporarily before fading. Apply makeup the next day if desired. Avoid hot showers, vigorous exercise, and sun exposure for 24-48 hours. Most patients return to work and social activities the same day.

Treated vessels are permanently eliminated and won’t return. However, new vessels may develop over time due to genetics, sun exposure, aging, or rosacea. Sun protection, proper skincare, and managing triggers minimize new formation. Most patients maintain results for many years. Occasional maintenance treatments address any newly formed vessels.

Facial vein treatments are typically considered cosmetic and not covered by insurance. Coverage is rare even with associated conditions like rosacea. Most patients pay out-of-pocket, but Health Savings Accounts (HSA) or Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) can often be used. We provide transparent pricing upfront and offer financing options for those who prefer payment plans.

Yes—Nd:YAG lasers at 1064nm wavelength safely treat facial veins in darker skin tones. This longer wavelength poses less risk of hyperpigmentation than shorter wavelengths. The key is using appropriate technology and parameters customized to your skin type. Our experienced providers assess your skin carefully and select the safest, most effective approach for excellent results across all skin types.

Initial results appear within days as treated vessels begin to darken and fade. Complete response develops over 2-6 weeks following each session. Smaller vessels typically fade faster than larger ones. Treated vessels may darken initially—this is normal and indicates successful treatment. Maximum improvement is visible 4-6 weeks post-treatment, which is why we schedule follow-up sessions at this interval.

Angel Croce
