How does hair removal work?

Human skin has between 500-1000 hair follicles per square inch. Hair removal involves the thermal destruction of these hair follicles. The machine puts energy into the skin which is absorbed by the melanin in the hair follicles. This heats the follicle and over time will damage it to the point where it can no longer produce a hair.

What can it be used for?

  • 90% permanent hair reduction
  • Ingrown Hairs (Pseudofolliculitis Barbae)
  • Inflammed glands in the underarm (Hidradenitis Suppertiva)

What type of light and lasers are used?

Alexandrite 755nm (Cynosure Apogee Elite) for light and medium skin types and 1064nm Nd:YAG for very dark skin types.

How many treatments do I need?

Most patients require between 6-10 treatments to achieve the desired hair reduction. Finer or lighter hair and darker skin tones may require more treatments. During the initial consultation, expected results and number of treatments will be discussed to ensure satisfaction.

Is it really permanent?

Yes, however, we cannot 100% guarantee the permanence of hair reduction due to a few factors: hormonal fluctuations or imbalances, trauma to the area or certain medications all may induce hair growth, interrupting the results from the laser hair reduction. We are confident in our lasers and if protocol is closely followed (receiving treatment every 4-6 weeks for the first 6 treatments), a significant reduction in unwanted hair should be achieved.

What happens during the procedure?

The area to be treated should be clean and shaven. Any lotions or perfumes should be removed from the skin. During the procedure, the handpiece and cooling device hover directly above the skin. With each pulse of the laser, a quick burst of heat is felt on the skin, while the cooling device blows cold air to counteract the heat, making the treatment extremely tolerable. In 4-6 weeks, the treatment is repeated.

What else should I know?

Very blonde, red, or white hairs do not have much pigment and may be very difficult to treat. Vellus hair (peach fuzz) can convert to mature, pigmented hair over long periods of time. This means that over the course of several years patients may want to come in for a touch-up from time to time.

What if I have a tan?

If you have a tan from sun exposure or sunless tanning products, you must wait until the tan fades completely before undergoing laser hair removal. A tan increases your risk of side effects such as blistering and discoloration. We are always happy to meet with you to review your needs. Please call 303.683.3235 to schedule an appointment or use the free consultation form and someone will call you as soon as possible.
