What Is Microneedling?

Of all the aging processes, the breakdown of collagen is most likely the what contributes most to fine lines and wrinkles, textural irregularities, and age spots. The matrix of collagen fibers is vital for a firm, youthful complexion, and it’s this support structure that microneedling most benefits. Dr. David Verebelyi and the team at Colorado Skin & Vein use the SkinPen®, the first FDA-cleared microneedling device, to elevate our patients’ microneedling treatments.

How Does Microneedling Work?

Microneedling has been around for years, but the technology of the SkinPen® is much more advanced. Ensuring that microneedling devices are FDA-clearance is important, because this proves SkinPen® has achieved laboratory grade sterility with single-use cartridges. This virtually eliminates the risks of needle damage or cross contamination. Patient safety is our top priority at Colorado Skin & Vein, and we can ensure that satisfaction with SkinPen®.

The device’s 14 stainless steel medical-grade needles create 1,600+ micro-channels in the skin to stimulate your skin’s healing response and promote collagen fiber production. With customizable depths, SkinPen® can treat areas where other microneedling devices can’t penetrate safely. Microneedling with SkinPen® is also safe for all skin types on the Fitzpatrick classification scale.

The tiny micro-channels produced by the SkinPen® make applying nourishing serums or Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) growth factors far more effective, because it allows the nutrients to penetrate deeper into the skin. With PRP, the growth factors recruit stem cells to flock to the treatment area where they copy cell DNA. This is much needed for rapid healing and enhanced treatment results. PRP has the ability to fade the appearance of hyperpigmentation, age spots, acne scarring, fine lines and wrinkles, and sun damage.

Am I a Good Candidate for Microneedling?

Microneedling treats a variety of skin concerns, such as pigmentation issues, acne scars, textural irregularities, uneven tone, fine lines and wrinkles, and sun damage. Ensuring that there is no active infection or acne in the treatment area is important to reduce the risk of spreading. Also, patients who have certain blood disorders must avoid this treatment overall. All in all, microneedling is an available treatment for all patients looking to rejuvenate their complexion with minimal downtime.

What are Microneedling Treatments Like?

On a positive note, microneedling treatments are relatively quick and require very little, if any, downtime. Each session lasts about 30 to 45 minutes depending on the size of your treatment area. Once medical-grade topical numbing agents are in effect, the SkinPen® is moved smoothly across your skin, creating vertical micro-channels at precise depths. Patients who add PRP or nourishing serums will have them infused right after the microneedling treatment, and you can return to “business as usual” right after. It is common for the skin to feel and look like it has a mild sunburn for a few days, but this subsides quickly.

What Results Can I Expect After Microneedling?

Microneedling typically shows results immediately. It can be expected to see improvements to your skin’s radiance and clarity. But the enhancements don’t stop there. As your skin heals, damaged skin cells are replaced with new, fresh ones—even with acne scars—and collagen and elastin production has increased beneath the surface. Improvements continue to accumulate over the following weeks. Fine lines and wrinkles fade, pigment concerns diminish, and your skin is noticeably softer and smoother. In clinical trials, 90% of patients reported improvement in the appearance of their acne scars after the third treatment. Your skin will continue to improve for up to 6 months as the collagen network is strengthened. The most common recommendation for patients to see optimal outcomes is a series of 3 treatments scheduled 4 weeks apart.

Your skin’s health is our passion at Colorado Skin & Vein. When your over-the-counter creams and cleansers are no longer effectively fighting aging, perhaps microneedling is just the thing you need to press the reset button on your skin.
