How Does Microneedling Work?
Microneedling has been around for years, but the technology of the SkinPen® is much more advanced. The device’s 14 stainless steel medical-grade needles create 1,600+ micro-channels in the skin to stimulate your skin’s healing response and promote collagen fiber production. With customizable depths, SkinPen® can treat areas where other microneedling devices can’t penetrate safely. Microneedling with SkinPen® is also safe for all skin types on the Fitzpatrick classification scale.
The tiny micro-channels produced by the SkinPen® make applying nourishing serums or Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) growth factors far more effective, because it allows the nutrients to penetrate deeper into the skin. With PRP, the growth factors recruit stem cells to flock to the treatment area where they copy cell DNA. This is much needed for rapid healing and enhanced treatment results. What are Microneedling Treatments Like?
On a positive note, microneedling treatments are relatively quick and require very little, if any, downtime. Each session lasts about 30 to 45 minutes depending on the size of your treatment area. Once medical-grade topical numbing agents are in effect, the SkinPen® is moved smoothly across your skin, creating vertical micro-channels at precise depths. Patients who add PRP or nourishing serums will have them infused right after the microneedling treatment, and you can return to “business as usual” right after. It is common for the skin to feel and look like it has a mild sunburn for a few days, but this subsides quickly.
What Results Can I Expect After Microneedling?
Microneedling typically shows results immediately. It can be expected to see improvements to your skin’s radiance and clarity. But the enhancements don’t stop there. As your skin heals, damaged skin cells are replaced with new, fresh ones—even with acne scars—and collagen and elastin production has increased beneath the surface. Improvements continue to accumulate over the following weeks. Fine lines and wrinkles fade, pigment concerns diminish, and your skin is noticeably softer and smoother.
