What Is A Spider Vein?

Feb 24, 2021
Spider veins, sometimes called thread veins, broken capillaries, or telangiectasias, are blood vessels near the surface of the skin that can appear pink, red, purple, or blue.

Spider veins, sometimes called thread veins, broken capillaries, or telangiectasias, are blood vessels near the surface of the skin that can appear pink, red, purple, or blue. These tiny vessels tend to be between barely visible and a couple of millimeters thick. They can show up virtually anywhere on the body but are most common on the face and legs.

Spider Vein Overview

Spider veins when vessels dilate due to sun damage or underlying medical issues like rosacea or venous reflux. As the vessels enlarge they become more visible. These vessels are unsightly and can cause pain. In many cases, on the legs, they are the precursor to varicose veins. Unlike varicose veins, spider veins do not bulge.

Spider veins in the face tend to be caused by sun damage or underlying medical conditions such as Rosacea. Spider veins in the legs tend to happen when the valves in the deeper veins are not working properly. This process eventually leads to varicose veins. This is mainly a hereditary issue but can be accelerated by jobs that force people to be on their feet for long periods of time, pregnancy, and lack of proper exercise.

Spider Vein Treatments

Spider veins can leave you feeling self-conscious and worrying about the way your face and body appear. Broken and damaged capillaries on the face, for instance, can lead to redness and rosacea, while those on the body can create long, scraggly streaksFortunately, there are very effective treatments that reduce their appearance or eliminate them entirely.

At Colorado Skin & Vein we treat facial veins and Rosacea with the most advanced Pulsed Dye Laser available, the Candela Prima. This new technology treats spider veins, Rosacea, Port Wine Stains, cherry hemangiomas, and a host of other vascular lesions. It is simply the safest and most effective treatment for facial spider veins. We have been using lasers to treat facial veins for almost 20 years. The Candela Prima laser for vein treatment is by far the best one we have ever used with highly effective results, minimal to no downtime, and the best safety profile available.

For spider veins on the legs, we first determine the exact cause of the vessels so we can ensure the best treatment possible. For superficial vessels that have no underlying valve issues, we use a procedure called sclerotherapy. This treatment involves injecting an FDA-approved medication directly into dilated blood vessels which causes the body to remove the vessels over the next several weeks. Afterward, the skin looks clear and free from visible signs of damaged vessels. Most patients require about three treatments to resolve even long-standing spider veins.

Some patients see improvements in tiny spider veins immediately after treatment. Some larger vessels may take the body a few weeks to fully remove.

Benefits of Spider Vein Treatment

Dr. Verebelyi and the team at Colorado Skin & Vein identify several benefits of spider vein treatment:

  • Non-surgical: Leg spider vein treatment requires injecting an FDA-approved medication (only available at doctor’s offices) into target blood vessels. It is entirely non-surgical with minimal recovery time.
  • High success rate: Sclerotherapy is a potent treatment that helps to reduce spider vein visibility in the vast majority of patients. Unsightly blue, purple, and red veins fade in the weeks and months following the procedure as the immune system recycles the treated tissue.
  • Improved facial redness and rosacea: Broken capillaries are the most common cause of rosacea. Pulsed Dye Laser (PDL) can help reduce facial redness, restoring your complexion to its former glory.
