What Are Varicose and Spider Veins?

Proper vein function relies on valves to ensure our blood flows to and from the heart in the proper direction. Varicose veins happen when these valves don’t function correctly and the vessels enlarge, turn dark blue or purple, and bulge. Spider veins result when the smaller veins fed by the varicose veins also become enlarged, appearing red or blue. Patients may desire to remove varicose or spider veins for medical or aesthetic reasons.

Varicose veins can predispose a patient to leg swelling and blood clots. Pregnancy, genetics, hormonal changes, or prolonged standing or heavy lifting may contribute to varicose and spider veins. Thankfully, there are treatments available, including minimally invasive options. Vein removal doesn’t jeopardize your blood supply since treatments redirect blood flow to healthier vessels deeper beneath the skin’s surface.

How Vein Removal Works?

Sclerotherapy is a minor and non-invasive option that collapses diseased vein walls and closes damaged vessels, redirecting blood flow to healthier nearby veins. Less risky than surgical options, sclerotherapy is safe and highly effective and requires no anesthesia. The sclerosing solution is injected into your varicose and spider veins to irritate the blood vessel, causing its collapse and, eventually, the vessel becomes scar tissue that slowly fades away.

Sclerotherapy can be highly effective in improving blood flow and limiting chronic swelling. This procedure is the gold standard for treating abnormally enlarged and visible blood vessels. Compared to surgical interventions, sclerotherapy is less invasive, relatively pain-free, and involves little to no downtime.

Am I a Good Candidate?

Not everyone with varicose or spider veins can be treated with sclerotherapy. The best course of action is to schedule a consultation with Colorado Skin & Vein specialists to discuss your options.

What is Treatment Like?

Your procedure begins with an ultrasound to determine the best plan to remove your diseased veins. Sometimes this ultrasound will be scheduled in advance of your sclerotherapy treatment as a separate appointment. Then your damaged vessels are injected with the sclerotherapy solution, causing the vein walls to become sticky and close. Your body will then reabsorb the collapsed veins and redirect blood flow to healthier vessels. Patients are free to resume daily activities because there’s little downtime with sclerotherapy. You will need to wear compression stockings for a time following your procedure.

What Results Can I Expect?

While some of the treated veins appear to vanish almost instantly, time is required for the body to absorb them and redirect blood flow. Vein closure is immediate, but symptoms may take a few days or weeks to abate. As many as 50-80% of injected veins may be successfully treated with each session and will not reappear, but sclerotherapy does not prevent new varicose and spider veins from forming.
