As we age, we often rethink many of the decisions made during our youth. Whether it might be spending too much time in the sun, or following a better skincare regimen, there are now any number of ways to reverse these effects that these decisions have on our skin. One such treatment is tattoo removal, a fast and effective way to reduce the appearance of unwanted tattoos.
Tattoo removal is performed through a series of laser treatments. The laser delivers light in very short energy pulses that directly targets the tattoo ink. The light energy is absorbed by the tattoo ink within a trillionth of a second. This causes the ink to fracture into smaller pieces. Once the ink particles are small enough, your body removes them through the lymphatic system. Since many tattoos have different colors we use a variety of laser wavelengths for optimal treatment.
The number of tattoo removal treatments required depends on the depth, color and amount of inkin the tattoo. The location of the tattoo on the patient’s body is also a determining factor in how many treatments are needed. Laser treatments are performed in the comfort of the physician’s office. The newest research indicates that treatments should be spaced about 8 weeksapart. Most tattoos take between 6-12 sessions but that may be reduces with our R20 protocol where tattoos are treated twice in the same session. Cosmetic tattoos and smaller tattoos with less ink often resolve in fewer sessions.

Most patients compare tattoo removal to a rubber band snapping against the skin. At Colorado Skin & Vein, we offer the latest in tattoo removal technology, with the PiQo4 laser from Lumenis. Not only is PiQo4 four times faster than the leading tattoo removal laser, but it is also more powerful and less painful because it focuses energy on the tattoo ink, not your skin. In addition, because PiQo4 breaks up pigment faster than traditional lasers, patients are less likely to develop negative side effects such as blistering, ghosting, scarring, and poor ink removal. We are one of very few offices which using numbing as a standard protocol for any patient who request it.
