How Does CoolSculpting® Work?

Fat cells freeze at a temperature higher than that of surrounding tissues, and this fact has changed the landscape of body contouring technology with CoolSculpting®. Fat cells crystallize at 53°F, while damage to surrounding tissues is only a risk once temperatures reach 32°F. This means CoolSculpting® technology can selectively damage only fat cells while preserving the integrity and health of surrounding tissues. These damaged fat cells are then targeted by the body’s lymphatic system and metabolized out, leaving your body sculpted and shapely in a way diet and exercise cannot always achieve. Up to 25% of existing fat cells are crystallized during a CoolSculpting® treatment, and there are no lumpy, misshapen adipose pads, and no scarring or trauma to heal from as with more traditional cosmetic interventions like liposuction.

Am I a Good Candidate?

CoolSculpting® is not a recommended treatment for significant weight loss, so patients who are within 30 pounds of their ideal weight and are in otherwise good health are excellent candidates.

Treatment, Downtime, and Results

CoolSculpting® is one of the easiest treatments in the cosmetic enhancement industry. It’s non-invasive, and it often only takes one or two treatments to achieve your goals. The applicators are applied and the vacuum sucks the target area into the handpiece, then reduces the tissue temperature to just under 53° F. The applicators are in place for an hour depending on the treatment area, and after the first ten minutes, the numbness should override any discomfort. Most patients read, play on their phones, or even nap, the procedure is that comfortable. Following the removal of the applicators, your tissues are massaged to increase fat cell damage.

There is no downtime with CoolSculpting®. As the damaged fat cells thaw, their membranes begin to leak between cells, signaling the body to begin the removal process. Over the next 3-4 months, around 25% of the fat layer is metabolized without developing fibrous tissues or scarring. The fat layer redistributes evenly, so there are no lumps or misshapen areas. It’s the same as before, only 25% thinner.

Does CoolSculpting® Hurt?

Once the CoolSculpting® technology is in place and the cooling begins, the 10 minutes it takes for the numbness to set in can be mildly uncomfortable. Veteran CoolSculpting® patients report any pain they experienced happened at this time. Pulling and pinching sensations are possible within the vacuum seal of the treatment area. Following the procedure, there’s a chance for discomfort along with itching and swelling. The area of treatment (abdomen versus arms versus thighs) may also have different sensitivities, with the abdomen being the most delicate. In rare cases, the numbness from the procedure may continue for a few weeks and even come and go. Side effects are rare and should be discussed before undergoing the procedure.
