CoolSculpting® is a nonsurgical procedure that uses state-of-the-art technology to eliminate unwanted fat. Because CoolSculpting® is gaining so much notoriety (over 1,000,000 procedures have been performed), people are very curious about the details of the procedure. The following are some of the most frequently asked questions about CoolSculpting®:
Research has found that the skin can withstand colder temperatures than fat, which means that fat cells can be frozen without harming the other tissue around them. The CoolSculpting® device is applied to the surface of the skin and delivers temperatures just low enough to freeze and eliminate the fat without damaging overlying skin.
After the fat cells are frozen and damaged, the body’s metabolic processes will naturally eliminate those damaged cells from the body over the next few months.
This procedure can effectively eliminate about 20 to 25 percent of the fat cells from the treated area with each treatment.
Patients require no sedation or anesthesia for the procedure. Patients notice the suction from the handpiece and coolness for the first few minutes of the procedure. Most patients work, read, sleep, or watch TV during the procedure!
After the procedure, the body will begin removing the damaged fat cells immediately. Some patients notice the slimming results between 5 and 8 weeks after treatment. Results will continue to improve over the next 3 to 4 months.
CoolSculpting® is a fat reduction treatment that permanently eliminates fat cells. This means that it actually reduces the number of fat cells in the treated areas. Weight loss, on the other hand, causes the existing fat cells to shrink in size, but the same number of cells remain. Once the fat cells are eliminated after CoolSculpting®, they cannot return, which means that gaining fat in this area will be difficult after the procedure. If the patient does gain weight, it will distributed evenly throughout the body, which helps keep bulges from returning.
