Are you bothered by stubborn bulges along your midsection, thighs, back, arms, or chin? If you’ve got persistent fat unaffected by diet and exercise, a noninvasive CoolSculpting® treatment can help you reveal your best body. Here’s how. Just as you can’t control where your body chooses to store excess fat — and how much it decides to store there — you can’t control which areas of fat your body uses for fuel when you burn more calories than you consume. The areas of fat that remain intact despite your best efforts are persistent fat. Luckily, noninvasive body contouring with CoolSculpting® makes it easier to spot-reduce unwanted pockets of persistent fat and create your best body. Read on as David Verebelyi, MD, RVT, and Christina Jordan, FNP, CANS of Colorado Skin and Vein in Englewood, Colorado are the first providers in Colorado to offer CoolSculpting. In this blog they discuss how this FDA-cleared fat-freezing (cryolipolysis) treatment works, and explain what you can expect during your session at Persistent fat is a common problem Persistent fat is exactly what it sounds like: Any area of diet- and exercise-resistant fat that your body hangs on to despite your best body-slimming efforts in the kitchen and at the gym. Several factors determine how your body stores fat, some of which are out of your control. A combination of mechanisms causes persistent fat, including: Genes Just like genes predetermine your height, your genes encode the characteristics of your body shape. If full hips and thighs (pear-shaped), round abdomens (apple-shaped), or submental fullness (double chin) tend to run in your family, you may struggle with the same patterns of persistent fat. Gender Your gender also influences how your body hangs on to fat: Women tend to have more fat deposits around their hips, belly, lower back, and thighs, while men usually store extra fat through their midsection and upper body. Age For many people, getting older is the primary reason for the appearance and tenacity of persistent fat. In your early thirties, your body gradually replaces muscle tissue (which takes work) with fat tissue (much easier to maintain). Hormones In your forties, age-related hormonal changes accelerate and cement these body changes. That explains why people who easily remained trim through early adulthood deal with stubborn bulges as they approach middle age. CoolSculpting is your body-shaping solution Exercising and eating wholesome foods can keep you fit and healthy, but these strategies don’t get results in your battle against persistent fat. So, what else can you do? Now, you can spot-reduce If you’re bothered by stubborn bulges of persistent fat along your midsection, thighs, back, arms, or chin that won’t disappear, CoolSculpting can get the job done and boost your confidence. It’s FDA-cleared to treat nine common areas of persistent fat, including on your: Abdomen (belly) Flank (love handles) Thighs (inner, outer) Upper knees Lower buttocks (banana roll) Back upper arms Upper back (bra line) Chin and jawline Backed by science and results, CoolSculpting noninvasive body contouring makes it easy to remove unwanted stubborn fat — safely, effectively, and without surgery. A highly targeted technique As the leading form of fat-freezing (cryolipolysis), CoolSculpting uses advanced controlled cooling technology to target, freeze, and eliminate the cells that make up unwanted areas of stubborn fat. The process follows: We place a gel pad on the treatment area We situate the applicator over the gel pad We activate the CoolSculpting platform The device progressively lowers the temperature You feel light vacuum pressure and intense cold The treatment area becomes temporarily numb At this point in the process, the applicator’s intensive cooling crystallizes the fat cells beneath your skin. Because fat freezes at higher temperatures than skin cells, your dermal tissues remain unaffected. Once your treatment ends, we massage the area to break up the fat cells for easier removal. Systematic fat flushing Once your lymphatic system identifies these crystallized fat cells as useless waste, it flushes them from your body. This gradual waste removal process means you can expect noticeable slimming in the treated area about a month after your session. About two months after treatment, once your body has enough time to process and eliminate most targeted fat cells, you may see up to a 25% reduction in persistent fat. You may also experience slimming effects for several months as your body continues to find and flush the crystallized fat cells. Are you ready to reveal your best body? While you may get the results you’re after with just one CoolSculpting treatment, most people need two or more sessions to reach their body-shaping goals. No matter how many sessions are in your CoolSculpting plan, you can expect a gentle, noninvasive treatment that doesn’t require post-procedural recovery or downtime. What are the differences between CoolSculpting and Liposonix? Although both of these methods will destroy fat, there are some significant advantages to using the CoolSculpting treatment instead of the Liposonix treatment. First of all, these two devices approach fat removal with different technology. CoolSculpting relies on two simple facts: fat freezes and fat is damaged at a higher temperature than your skin. This allows for the gentle removal of fat without any surgery, cutting or scarring. Conversely, the Liposonix device uses high frequency ultrasound (HIFU) to heat and damage the tissue. The second differentiation is that CoolSculpting is selective. That means that the device will be able to damage fat cells without damaging the cells around them. Normal body temperature is about 98.6o F. Fat cell freezes at just about 53o F, while other cells such as skin and muscle freeze at 32o F. Using a cooling plate, the tissue temperature is decreased to just below 53o F, this damages the fat while leaving the other tissue unharmed. On the other hand, the Liposonix device uses a high frequency ultrasound, which is not selective; it will heat and destroy any tissue where the beam is aimed. As you can imagine, CoolSculpting’s selectivity makes it much less painful. Only twice, in almost 300 procedures, have we needed to give a patient oral pain medication for discomfort. With Liposonix, almost all patients are given narcotics for the procedure such as Vicodin or Percocet, and many still report the procedure as being very uncomfortable. Lastly, while there is little doubt that both procedures work, there is much more research on CoolSculpting and its proven results. There are more than 10 peer-reviewed, scientific articles on the CoolSculpting procedure, as compared to only one small abstract currently on Liposonix. At Colorado Skin Care, we can confidently predict that every patient will lose about 25% of their fat after a single CoolSculpting treatment. Did you resolve to shrink those stubborn pockets of fat in 2019? Maybe you’re doing it through diet alone, or maybe you’ve thrown exercise into the mix. Or maybe you’re doing both. But even then, a healthy lifestyle may not be enough to tackle fat that’s genetically prone to cling to your abdomen, thighs, or even the underside of your chin. *Individual Results May Vary. That’s why you may benefit from CoolSculpting, an FDA-approved fat reduction treatment that requires no surgery or downtime. But how exactly does CoolSculpting work? And how much does CoolSculpting cost? The Average Cost of CoolSculpting in Denver According toRealSelf, the average cost of CoolSculpting in the greater Denver and Englewood areas is $2,350. CoolSculpting can be as little as $750 or as much as $4,500. This is because CoolSculpting is priced according to the treatment area. For example, treating the underneath of your chin will be less expensive than treating your whole abdomen. Regardless of the area you treat, CoolSculpting is a lot more affordable than surgical fat reduction options, making it a great choice for more budget-conscious patients. *Individual Results May Vary. How Does CoolSculpting Work? CoolSculpting is a non-surgical fat reduction treatment that uses freezing energy to target the fat cells just beneath the sub-dermal tissue. This energy is delivered via handpieces, which are placed directly onto the treatment area and moved around for about an hour (the average treatment duration). Over the session, the freezing energy crystallizes the fat cells, causing them to become permanently damaged. Within the course of eight to twelve weeks, about 24% of fat cells within the treatment area are processed and removed by the body’s lymphatic system, resulting in surprisingly significant inch loss. CoolSculpting® is widely hailed as one of the best non-surgical fat removal treatments available today. But even though CoolSculpting® is a highly successful treatment that has helped countless patients achieve their goals, this treatment doesn’t always go according to plan. If your results from CoolSculpting® aren’t quite what you hoped or if you developed one or more complications after your initial CoolSculpting® procedure, Dr. Verebelyi and his staff can provide the necessary revisions or corrections to improve your CoolSculpting® results. Getting the Coolsculpting® Results You Want The most important part of preparing for any cosmetic procedure is doing your research to find the most qualified surgeon. Even many well-trained and skilled plastic surgeons are not familiar with new technologies like CoolSculpting®. Patients should be certain that the provider who performs their CoolSculpting® treatment is trained and experienced in fat anatomy and has attended CoolSculpting® University. However, if your procedure does not produce the results you are seeking or if the treated area develops lumps of fat or uneven tissue, Dr. Verebelyi can help. REQUEST A CONSULTATION Simply fill out the form on this page, and one of our highly trained staff members at Colorado Skin & Vein will reach out to your promptly to schedule your appointment. Dealing With Side Effects from CoolSculpting® After CoolSculpting®, it is fairly common for patients to experience temporary side effects such as swelling, redness, bruising, tingling, or numbness. These side effects will subside quickly and should not affect your results. However, in some unusual cases, CoolSculpting® can lead to skin damage or other complications, or it may produce poor results. One example of this is when the handpiece is inappropriately placed during treatment, leading to contour irregularities. Another example is the reduction of too much fat. In both of these cases, Dr. Verebelyi can perform revision CoolSculpting® to improve your body contours and refine your results. Patients should recognize that complications and adverse reactions are rare, and CoolSculpting® is FDA approved for the safe removal of fat. However, in the unlikely event that you experience one of these unexpected complications or poor results, Dr. Verebelyi can help to resolve the issue. At our practice, we treat many skin conditions and can perform alternative fat removal or fat transfer procedures to help individuals achieve their aesthetic goals. If CoolSculpting® is not right for you, Dr. Verebelyi may be able to perform another procedure instead to create the smooth and slim body contours you desire. “The staff at Colorado Skin & Vein is very helpful and always makes sure to answer any questions during visits. I can tell that they truly care about the patient experience. Thank you Dr. Verebelyi and Team!” DC Take the Next Step – Request A Consultation If your CoolSculpting® procedure “went wrong,” contact Colorado Skin & Vein to perform revision CoolSculpting® or other corrective procedures. CoolSculpting is a simple (and painless) noninvasive procedure that destroys fat cells by freezing them. The treatment is straightforward, with no needles, incisions, or anesthesia. So, there isn’t much you need to do to prepare for your session. But you should keep a few things in mind as you near your appointment. How to Prepare for CoolSculpting Prepare your Skin. Because the procedure involves suctions and continual massaging, your skin needs to be as healthy and intact as possible to reduce potential irritation. Moisturize your skin weeks in advance to smooth out dryness for your future treatment. Avoid tanning and sunburns. (Think about a suction on a fresh burn — ouch!) Be mindful of physical activities that could cause scrapes, cuts, and bruises. (Your appointment could be delayed if your skin is too damaged.) Shave any body hair near and around the area that will be treated. Clean and remove any lotion from your skin directly before the treatment. Arrive Prepared. CoolSculpting treatments can last hours, so we advise you to eat a light meal or snack before and, of course, stay hydrated. Hydrating also helps the body remove toxins. Wear something comfy. Loose and comfortable clothes that are gentle on the skin are preferred. Keep in mind that you may get gel on your undergarments — consider bringing a change of clothes. Bring something to occupy your time. Again, you’ll be in a treatment bed for a couple of hours. Consider bringing headphones, a book, or think about bingeing your favorite shows while you are in your session. What Not to do to Prepare for Your CoolSculpting Treatment: 1. Don’t take medication/supplements that are considered blood thinners. Think anti-inflammatories, like aspirin or Advil. These should be avoided for at least one week before the procedure, as it increases your risk of bruising. 2. Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and smoking. Unfortunately, smoking can slow your recovery process (and delay the results) so avoid smoking for at least a week before your session. Likewise, avoiding caffeine for two hours pre/post-treatment and alcohol an entire 24 hours before is recommended. Plan your social calendar accordingly. What to do After CoolSculpting Have Patience. As cliché as it sounds, all good things take time! You may see a difference in your body as early as two weeks, but your full results will take time, with the average results visible in three to four months. However, you’ll continue to excrete fat cells for up to three to six months after the procedures. Remember to take targeted photos of your progress throughout the process to see those before and after shots! Stay active and healthy. Your lifestyle and habits are contributing factors to your long-term success. The science is there; CoolSculpting does work! But your overall results will depend on you. Maintaining a healthy diet of vegetables, proteins, whole grains, and fruits, and exercising often will enhance your results! Consider additional treatments. After allowing your body time to heal (and seeing those results!), you may want to consider additional sessions. No, you won’t need follow-up treatments for the previously treated area, but you should consider if there are other areas, you would like to treat. What Not to do After CoolSculpting Don’t overdo it. Though noninvasive, keep in mind your body just went through a strenuous procedure and needs time to recover. You may be sore and should take time to rest. Pause the gym. You don’t want to irritate and ignite more soreness! Be gentle with your skin. When showering, take extra care around the affected area. Don’t expect results immediately. We already touched on this, but mentally prepare yourself to trust the process, and give your body time to heal. Possible Coolsculpting Side Effects Thankfully, the side effects of CoolSculpting are minimal. But there are a few things you should be aware of post-treatment. Though rare, during the first two weeks, you may experience the following Coolsculpting side effects: Tingling Deep itching Tender to touch Numbness Muscle spasms Aching and or soreness After four weeks, get ready to start seeing the positive side effects. For up to four months, your body will continue to process the injured fat cells into your body naturally. You want to rejuvenate the skin on your face. Maybe you’re dealing with discoloration from years of sun exposure. Or perhaps you’re frustrated by small lines and wrinkles around your eyes and mouth. One method to revitalize your appearance is through CO2 laser treatment. CO2 laser treatment has been available for a number of years. It’s one of the most reliable skin tightening procedures that produce permanent results. However, many people worry that this type of laser skin resurfacing process will damage their skin. If you’ve been wondering about unwanted side effects, read on to learn more about how CO2 laser treatment works and how you can optimize your outcomes. CO2 Laser Treatment: A Basic Overview A medically trained professional can use a traditional CO2 laser to remove the upper layer of facial skin. This causes new layers of skin to develop over a period of weeks. The new skin surface will be smoother and more youthful-looking. It should also be free from blotchiness. Many laser skin resurfacing before and after pictures show dramatic results. Because the CO2 laser treatment takes away the epidermis, or top level of skin, it leaves the remaining affected skin tender and red. Patients who undergo CO2 laser treatments typically spend up to three weeks recovering. After this initial period, they may still need to wait for months until their skin looks completely natural and healthy. In other words, CO2 laser treatment is a very big commitment. You can expect to need at least a local anesthetic, if not general anesthesia, to get through each session. However, CO2 lasers are very predictable in terms of what they can do. If you’re not interested in or able to set aside several weeks to recover from CO2 laser treatment, you may prefer to undergo CO2 fractional laser resurfacing instead. How Does CO2 Fractional Laser Resurfacing Work? Fractional CO2 lasers remove the top layer of skin just like their more powerful CO2 laser counterparts. The difference, though, is that the laser’s microbeams only remove some columns of skin. This means that a large percentage of your skin remains untouched. As such, you can expect a far faster downtime than you would with regular CO2 lasers. Though fractional CO2 lasers do not penetrate as wide an area as regular CO2 lasers, they do an excellent job. Many patients are thrilled to have fewer sun damage marks, improved skin textures, and minimized pockets of wrinkles and fine lines. Additionally, patients like being able to get back to their regular routines quickly. Can Anyone Get CO2 Fractional Laser Resurfacing? All types of CO2 laser treatment can be done on any skin type, including dark-toned skin. With that being said, not everyone is an immediate candidate. Even if you find a great provider by Googling “laser skin resurfacing near me,” you may be introduced to a different type of skin rejuvenated method better suited for your situation. For instance, CO2 laser treatment may not be for you if you take certain kinds of medication or are dealing with serious health problems that compromise your immunity. The use of tobacco may interfere with your body’s ability to heal after this or any related type of procedure, too. The best way to find out if CO2 laser treatment is the best option for you is to talk with a medical professional. That way, you can get a personalized opinion based on your history and goals. So Will CO2 Laser Treatment Leave Lasting Damage? The good news is that most patients recover from all types of CO2 laser treatment without experiencing any damage to their skin. You can take measures to ensure that you reduce your chance of negative side effects by: Following pre-procedure and post-procedure guidelines. Contacting your doctor about any concerns immediately. Avoiding the sun after your procedure. Wearing sunscreen and moisturizers. Keeping your face cleansed. If you would like to get more information about fractional CO2 laser treatment or other popular skin rejuvenating solutions like pulsed dye lasers and microdermabrasion, please contact Colorado Skin & Vein by submitting an online form today. Our team can help improve your skin’s appearance by using the right mix of world-class techniques for your individual needs.
