How IPL Treats Sun Damage

IPL – which stands for intense-pulsed light – treatments are unique in that they’re specifically designed to treat hyperpigmentation caused by sun damage.

Here’s how it works: the IPL treatment delivers pulses of light energy to the complexion. The pigmentation within the skin absorbs this light, which causes it to break down. Over time and with the recommended round of treatments (usually about four to six procedures), the pigment is resorbed by the body, leaving behind clear and glowing skin.

Am I a Candidate for IPL Treatments?

You’re a good candidate for IPL treatments if you have moderate sun damage. This damage usually comes in the form of hyperpigmentation, sun spots, dark freckles, and other pigmented lesions. Patients with fair-to-medium skin tones often see the best results from IPL treatments.

How to Maintain Results

After a series of IPL treatments, you’ll be ready to reveal your glowing new skin to the world. If you want to maintain your results, here’s what you need to do:

  • Wear sunscreen whenever possible, especially if you’re outside. Your newly revealed skin will be particularly sensitive to the sun’s UV rays, so keep it protected with SPF 30 or more.
  • Avoid smoking; additionally, try to minimize your alcoholic intake, as this can be particularly damaging to the skin.
  • Invest in a good skincare regimen. This includes face wash, toner, a good serum/moisturizer combo, and plenty of professional skin treatments.
  • Follow your dermatologist’s recommendations for maintaining your beautiful new skin!
