Beware Imitation Injectables

Injectables are ideal for quickly rejuvenating your appearance without the risks and downtime associated with surgery. Dermal fillers, such as JUVÉDERM® and Sculptra® Aesthetic, are injected into the skin to add volume to fill wrinkles and depressions. In addition, JUVÉDERM® can be injected to add volume to thin lips. Neurotoxin injectables, such as BOTOX®, are injected into the muscles that cause wrinkles, especially in the upper face. Most patients can immediately return to work and their regular activities, and results become visible immediately with fillers and within a few days after treatment with BOTOX®.

However, injectables (as well as some skincare products) are not always what they seem. There are some unprofessional “injectors” who use expired, diluted, and even illegal products and put patients’ health at risk. These people offer treatments at reduced costs, but they generally produce ineffective or even reactive results (read: infections). With cosmetic procedures, you get what you pay for, and when it comes to your appearance, you don’t want to look cheap or put your health at risk.

Here is what and who to look for to help determine the authenticity of your injectables.

Beware of fraudulent products, which may:

• Have a broken or insecure seal

• Be banned by the FDA

Who?

The qualifications of the person administering your injectable treatment(s) are a big indication of the results you can expect and the quality of the product they are using. A doctor or registered nurse with medical training generally has adequate knowledge of the facial structures, but you should make sure they are trained and experienced in injectable treatments to achieve the best results. If they are qualified, experienced, and performing your treatment in an accredited center, it is highly likely they are using authentic products.
