Know Your ABCs

A: Asymmetry

Does the lesion have asymmetry (one half of the lesion does not match the other)?

B: Borders

Does the lesion have uneven edges or jagged borders?

C: Color

Is the lesion more than one color (i.e. brown/black, blue/black, etc.)?

D: Diameter

Is the lesion larger than 6 millimeters or the size of a pencil eraser?

E: Evolving

Has the lesion become larger or changed shape or color over the past year?

abcs-of-lesionsIf you answered yes to one or more of these questions, the lesion should be evaluated by a board-certified dermatologist. Monthly skin self-examinations and regular skin checks by a dermatologist are essential for the early detection of skin cancer.
