We’re all familiar with dreaded spider veins and other seemingly cosmetic issues related to veins, but did you know more than half of the time these veins are signs of a more serious medical issue? Visible vein problems may be the result of deep vein problems, and it is important that superficial veins are not ignored or treated blindly.
An estimated 40 percent of Americans have some type of venous disorder or insufficiency, which is characterized by the improper functioning of the valves in the veins. Rather than keeping the blood flowing back to the heart, faulty valves allow the blood to flow backwards (venous reflux), which then pools in the lower body. This stagnant blood causes venous hypertension, leading to varicose veins and other symptoms such as heavy or tired legs. Left untreated, venous insufficiencies can cause even more serious health issues, such as ulcers, blood clots deep in the veins (deep vein thrombosis or DVT), and cellulitis.
Signs and symptoms of venous insufficiency are usually present in the legs and can include:
- Tired or heavy legs
- Restlessness Leg Syndrome (RLS)
- Skin discoloration in the lower legs and ankles
- Small linear red, pink, or purple vessels especially on the inside of the knee or at the ankle
- Varicose veins
Diagnosing Venous Disorders
To correctly diagnose venous insufficiency, Dr. Verebelyi and his team will review the patient’s history of symptoms and perform an ultrasound of the veins. This ultrasound identifies damaged veins and maps out the venous system to determine what veins need to be treated. Based on the correct diagnosis, Dr. Verebelyi and his staff can ensure that the safest and most effective treatment is chosen.
