LEARN MORE ABOUT PLATELET-RICH PLASMA

PRP uses autologous plasma injections (isolated from your own blood and concentrated) to help your blood clot and support new cell growth. The process promotes your body’s natural healing process.

  • Soft Tissue Injuries
  • Chronic Tendon Problems
  • Surgical Wounds

Because platelet-rich-plasma is derived from your own blood, the risk for a potential allergic reaction is drastically reduced. Although side effects are rare, symptoms from the injection itself may include; infection, tissue damage, pain at the injection site, or nerve injury.

Most patients find the procedure to be very tolerable. However, you may feel slight pressure during the initial blood draw and/or throughout the reinjection process. A topical anesthetic can be applied upon request.

You’ll be asked to avoid alcohol and smoking at least 3-days prior to your appointment (7-days is ideal). Anti-inflammatory medications should also be put on hold one week before your treatment (except when taking baby aspirin for the heart). On the day of your appointment, be sure to drink plenty of water. Eat a light meal 1-2 hours before your blood-draw.

PRP injections are done in a simple 3-step process.

  1. Dr. Verebelyi will draw a sample of your blood (amount varies based on treatment area).
  2. The blood is placed in a centrifuge, and a lab tech prepares the separated blood for injection.
  3. Dr. Verebelyi will then pinpoint specific treatment areas and begin the quick injection process.

The amount of time you’ll spend in-office depends on several factors including the amount of blood being drawn and the treatment area. We typically ask that you prepare to spend 60-90 minutes with us.

Recovery time varies on a patient by patient basis. In some cases, you’ll be advised to take it easy for a while, but typically, that’s as a result of the initial injury rather than the PRP injections. Most patients are able to continue their daily activities as normal.

After your procedure, your leg will be wrapped in a compression bandage and you will be up and walking the same day. You will be able to resume light routine activity the next day, and athletic or strenuous activities within several days to a couple of weeks, depending on your specific case.

Results from PRP treatments are not immediate. The procedure is designed to help promote healing which should become evident within several weeks or months as you begin to see significant improvement.
