The popularity of non-surgical skin tightening has been steadily rising due to the effectiveness of new device models and individuals opting for less invasive forms of anti-aging treatments. Patients who are considering surgical procedures for tightening of the skin and improvement of skin quality should research the benefits of choosing a non-invasive treatment before making their final decision.
Who Is a Candidate?
Anyone who is starting to notice the signs of aging and does not want to undergo an invasive surgical procedure to improve it may be a candidate. Skin quality and mild to moderate skin laxity on the face, neck, and body will all benefit from non-surgical skin tightening procedures. Typically, one to two treatments per year are needed for maximum benefits and results.
Modalities of Skin Tightening
There are several modalities of skin tightening available to the consumer seeking treatment. My personal treatment preference is Ultherapy® (aka Ulthera®). The 2016 NewBeauty winner for Best Nonsurgical Skin Tightening has four U.S. FDA-cleared indications for brow lift, neck, and submental (under chin) lift along with the improvement of fine lines and wrinkles of the face and décolleté. You will really see a difference with Ulthera®; which is why many celebrities are choosing the treatment to prolong their youthful appearance.
How Treatment Is Performed
The treatment delivers ultrasound energy and heat to the deep layers of the skin to stimulate collagen at the dermal level for a gradual lifting and tightening effect. The device features an imaging screen so the practitioner can see how much energy is passing through the skin and at what level it is being delivered. Most patients elect for pain medication, as the treatment can be uncomfortable, although many say ibuprofen provides adequate relief.
The skin may be red or feel swollen (particularly in the first few days following treatment), but minimal downtime is expected. Typically, you should notice tighter skin two to three months post-treatment, and the effects will continue as more collagen is formed. Maintenance treatments are recommended every one to three years for optimum results.
